Reefcare Report: Watering, Weeding and Bugs!

For our May Reefcare session we were joined by Merrilyn, Brad, Misima and our lovely supervisor Mahi. We of course were also joined by two ospreys and our friendly magpies!

Merrilyn and Brad had planted some natives at the top right of the eastern slope a few weeks earlier and began by watering them. They stayed in this section tackling bitou and other weeds in the area.

Mahi found the native plant Canavalia which had grown bean pods in this area and collected some to scatter around the site.

Mahi and Misima combed over the grassy hill picking out weeds that had come up since the previous session two months before, which were mostly bitou and asparagus fern.

They found a Giant Green Slantface (Acrida conica), a Triangles (Trigonodes hyppasia), a mushroom growing out of the sand, a scaly cricket and some superb fairywrens.

Merrilyn and Brad had to head off a bit early this session so we decided to have morning tea next to the carpark. Big thanks to Mahi who brought delicious mud cake and tea!

Mahi and Misima then headed back down to the top of the site for the remaining hour to take a dense section of asparagus fern along the fence, focusing on the berries.
