Want to learn about the wonders of Long Reef?
At 3:30pm on Sunday 7 December we are holding a free event:
Come along and hear experts Phil Colman and Dr Peter Mitchell OAM talking on the reef habitat, geology and ocean currents. Phil and Peter are the authors of two books on Long Reef.
The Snorkel Squad will also share the amazing underwater life they enjoy locally! Field Guides on sale plus free coastal plants. This is a Friends of Long Reef event, and part of the Ocean Festival 2025. It will be held at the Reef Education Room on Fisherman's beach (east end next to the amenities).

Who are the Friends of Long Reef?
The aquatic reserve is renowned for its abundant marine biodiversity, unique geology, and its cultural, scientific and educational value. Over 140 bird species rest and feed here, including migrating birds from the northern Arctic, plus the occasional penguin or seal. The headland and shore platform are also part of a proposed UNESCO Geopark due to their distinctive geological and cultural features.
The Friends’ main focus is to support the protection of the Long Reef Aquatic Reserve for future generations, and showcase its current beauty and ecological wonders. Our activities include:
Community education on its features through walks, talks and citizen science monitoring
Advocacy on the reserve’s importance and protection at events, forums and in submissions
Researching its conservation needs and lobbying for solutions - including liaison with scientists, researchers, grant bodies, Council, policymakers and other key stakeholders
Collaborating with local groups on mutual goals in marine and coastal conservation, education, and sustainable and responsible use of natural areas.
